Difference between GMAT and GRE

Before starting GMAT Preparation or GRE Preparation, you should know difference between GMAT and GRE. Both of these exams are acceptable for admission in MBA in most of the universities. Therefore, let’s discuss this with respect to different important aspects as shown in table below:

Difficulty Level

GMAT quantitative section is considered as the hardest section in any test of the world. But GMAT verbal section is rather easy as compared to GRE verbal section.

GRE quantitative section is somewhat easy as compared to GMAT quantitative section. But GRE verbal section is very hard as compared to GMAT verbal section. As GRE verbal section also require to remember usage of words.

Adaptability

GMAT is question adaptive. It means the next question depends on your performance in current question. If you correctly answer current question, there’s more chance that your next question would be difficult.

On other hand, GRE is section adaptive. It means the next section of same type (i.e quantitative or verbal) depends on your performance in current section. If current section is perfect, next section will consist of difficult questions.

Experimentation

In GMAT, approximately one-fifth to one-quarter of the questions are experimental in both quantitative and verbal sections.

On other hand, GRE has one experimental section, rather than random questions.

Verbal Section

Main difference of verbal section in GMAT from GRE is that GMAT has a type of questions that based on basic grammar knowledge and rules. These questions are known as Sentence Correction (S.C).

On other hand, GRE has questions that based on vocabulary. It’s more like Fill-in-the-blanks where the best suitable word or words need to put to check the contextual meaning in a sentence if correctly plug-in. These questions are of two types namely: Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence.

Quantitative Section

In GMAT quantitative section, only two types of questions will come namely: Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency.

On other hand, GRE quantitative section include four types of questions namely: Problem Solving, Quantitative Comparison, Numeric Entry and Data Interpretation.

Essay Writing Section

In GMAT, you’ll have one issue task that must be complete within 30 minutes. Additionally, you’ll have an Integrated section that may include questions with tables, graphs, two part analysis questions that depends on logic.

On other hand, GRE has 2 essay writing tasks namely: Issue Task and Argument Task. And you’ll have 30 minutes for each tasks to complete.

Calculator option

In GMAT, you’ll not have option to use on-screen calculator in quantitative section. But in IR section you’ll be given the option.

On other hand, In GRE quantitative section, you’ll able to use on-screen calculator for solving your questions in much speed.

Questions attempting

In GMAT, you’ll not able to revert back to previous question, if you like to correct the option. Because, in GMAT, the test is question adaptive.

On other hand, In GRE, you can not only revert back but also suddenly go to any question number within a section. But once the section is complete and you moved on to next section, you cannot revert back to previous section. Because, in GRE, the test is section adaptive.

9.

Test Centers

As both of the exams are conducted by different organizations, both exams don’t have same test centers. GMAT is conducted by GMAC, which is independent body from ETS, which conduct GRE.

As GRE is conducted by ETS, which is totally different organization from GMAC, so GRE test centers are different from those of GMAT.

10.

Test dates & Schedules

GMAT test is conducted daily. So you can choose any date in a week or in a month.

GRE is conducted only in week days (Mon – Thursday) in any month. And GRE is conducted daily two times (around 9:00am or 1:30pm)

11.

Usefulness

GMAT test is used only for Business School to apply for MBA, Masters in Finance or Management or PhD in Finance or Management.

GRE is used for both Business School and non-Business School, and is applicable for all field of study for Masters as well as PhD programs.

12.

Test Fee

GMAT test fee is currently $250.

GRE test fee is currently $205.
